President William Hickman called the meeting to order at 7:05 p.m. in the Seattle Parks and Recreation Building, 100 Dexter Ave. N., Seattle. In addition to President Hickman, the following were present: Lawrie Robertson, Gwen Robertson, Carole Langenbach, Patti Petesch, Neal Stoddard, Ivars Ikstrums, Kenny Emerick, Doris Heritage, Erika Daligcon, Stan Chraminski, Asha Dean, Darlene Hickman, Becca Peter, Adam Lint, Tom Cotner, Kwajalein Griffin, Bob Bowman, and Bob Langenbach.
I. NEW BUSINESS
A. MUT Proposal: Adam Lint said he was proposing a PNTF Championship 13 Mile Trail Run August 13, 2010. It will be at 8:00 a.m. at Cougar Mountain. The Masters and Open Committees are contributing $800 each for the contest. Scott McCoubrey will be the race director. He asked for the PNTF’s approval. It was moved and passed that the event be designated the PNTF Trail Championship.
B. PNTF Annual Meeting Place and Date: Patti Petesch discussed our past meetings. Darlene suggested Sunday September 26, 2010. Kenny Emerick checked his schedule and agreed as he will be able to cook for it that day. Patti will look into sites, but it was agreed that the SW Complex (Sealth) would be good if she can schedule it there.
C. Parks Department Update: Patti Petesch said Parks Superintendant Tim Gallagher had resigned. His probable successor will be Christopher Williams who is a big track fan. There are thoughts on how to update the fencing at West Seattle in 2013. The Hiawatha track upgrade will be starting soon. The process will probably do the final layer around July 18th. West Seattle is being used continuously. The master plans for golf courses will include running paths around them, starting this fall at Jackson Golf Course. Gallagher had approved the 2011 Club Cross Country Nationals at Jefferson GC. He also has approved asphalting the cart paths there.
II MINUTES AND EXECUTIVE REPORTS
A. Minutes: Bob Langenbach distributed a set of corrected minutes for the April Board Meeting. He had sent them to Becca Peter, the PNTF Web Master for posting. The minutes were approved as distributed.
B. Treasurers Report: Gwen Robertson distributed her report as of June 16, 2010. The report was unanimously accepted. The following are the accounts: Youth -- $6,303.68; Open -- $8,410.12; Open Chair’s Fund -- $4,062.69; Masters -- $7,638.61; General Officials -- $1,762.24; Fred Dean Youth Travel -- $6,344.75; General -- $30,994.59
C. President’s Report: President Hickman attended former USATF President Pat Rico’s memorial service. He, Darlene Hickman, and Ed Koch gave eulogies. Darlene focused on her positions and career in IAAF roles, Bill presented her international positions and aspects of her career, and Ed dwelled on her USATF roles and her mentoring of many people. USATF President Stephanie Hightower and many others were there at Croton-on-Hudson. The following day, he and Darlene attended the Grand Prix T&F on Randall’s Island’s Icahn Stadium. PNTF’s Ginnie Powell won the 100 hurdles and Aretha Thurmond was second in the discus. Maddie Meyers, Washington high schooler, won the high school mile. Bill also mentioned the adverse conditions he and many other PNTF officials endured at the 2A, 3A, 4A meet at Mt. Tahoma HS. He commented his starting shells now cost $1.00 each! Lionel Leach, USATF Youth Chair told Bill about cheating by youth athletes. President Hickman also thanked Bill Roe and Club NorthWest for presenting an all day officiating clinic.
D. Vice President’s Report: Kwajalein Griffin commented on the on-line entry process the Youth were using. She said it should have been implemented in 2011 after giving it a test in 2010 to work out the kinks. She said the process required her and Patti and Kenny to do PNTF’s JO entries from 9 am to 6 pm on Saturday. The clubs paid up front by cash, money order, or check.
E. Membership Report: Tracy Silva had e-mailed her report to Carole Langenbach. There are 971 Youth members, 237 Open members, 471 Masters members and 52 Clubs.
F. Office Manager: Carole Langenbach had no report.
III OLD BUSINESS
A. Club Cross 2011: Bob Springer was not present. Doris reported that she, Bob Springer, Mike Scott, and Bob Langenbach did a site visit of the Jefferson Golf Course and the Renaissance Hotel. The group also rode the Light Rail from the Tukwila station to the hotel. It is an easy trip from the airport to the hotel.
B. WIAA/WOA: Bob Springer was not present.
C. Online meet entry: Kwajalein Griffin mentioned this in the VP’s report above.
D. USATF Annual Meeting Youth Officers term grievance: Kenny Emerick said there had been no advancement of the grievance, but it is being worked on.
E. Marymoor Park Hammer Facility: Fred Bingisser e-mailed a brief message saying he will give a report after he returns from Switzerland.
IV COMMITTEE REPORTS
A. Youth Committee: Asha Dean said the Association JO Combined Events competitions were held last weekend. The Association JO T&F events are this coming weekend. The Regional JO’s will take place July 8-11. The JO Cross Country Nationals will be in Alabama this year. There will be a Youth oriented Coaching Level II school after the JO National Championships in Sacramento. It will begin August 1, 2010.
B. Open Committee: Tom Cotner said Becca Peter directed the PNTF T&F Open Championship at Kings HS on June 19th. Becca said it was a small field, but with the help of the PNTF Officials it was well run. Cotner then thanked the PNTF officials for their help. Tom said the Beat the Bridge 8k winners held May 16th were Rose Wetzel and Eric Garner. July 10th will be the 5k in Mill Creek, and the 10k will be in Snoqualmie.
a. MUT – Adam Lint reported that Joe Gray was 3rd at the Mt Washington Hill Climb. He was awarded a position on the US National Mountain and Trail Running Team. The White River 50 Mile Trail Run is again the National Championship. It will be held on July 31st.
C. Masters Committee: George Mathews was not present. Neal Stoddard reported that they held a meeting and talked about the Seattle Park Meet. The Association Championship will be July 17th at the Seattle Classic. George is obtaining information on next year’s regional meet to be held in the PNTF Association. The masters are hoping it can be done as a one-day meet, instead of the usual two. The committee donated $1,000 to SMAC for equipment they’ve purchased.
a. Events – Neal Stoddard reported the Beat the Bridge winners were David McCulloch and Lucy Smith.
D. Race Walk: Stan Chraminski thanked the PNTF Officials for their help at the April RW. The next walk will be at the July 17th Seattle Classic.
E. Officials Committee
a. PNTFOA -- Neal Stoddard reported that they had not held a meeting. Lawrie Robertson mentioned that he and Jona Silva were happy to be able to do the 2A Girls and Boys Pole Vault at PLU on Saturday when the bad weather at the Mt Tahoma HS meet cancelled those events on Friday.
b. Certification and Training – Neither Bill Hickman nor Lawrie Robertson had a report.
F. PNTF Website: Bob Springer was not present. Becca Peter reported she’ll be doing a lot of updating of the site.
G. USATF Association Committee -- Bill Roe was not present.
H. USATF Board of Directors – Darlene Hickman reported that 2 Associations in the east are insolvent. USATF Counsel LaMont Jones is leaving June 30th. However, USATF already has hired someone to replace him and will announce his name June 28th. The USATF BoD will have a meeting in Des Moines, IA June 26-27. She, as Secretary, will be there. The Coaching Registry is ongoing. They are discussing a code of conduct. The USATF Annual Meeting will be in Virginia Beach VA Thursday through Sunday December 2-5, 2010. The schedule is shortened by one day in hopes it will increase attendance.
Miscellaneous comments and information:
Patti Petesch commented on the USATF Associations Committee. She said Youth transfers between associations now must be signed by the membership chair of each association according to Rule 300. Bill Hickman growled that this is something that should be able to be accomplished by one phone call.
Youth Drug Testing probably won’t occur as it is expensive, but those picked for the Youth Worlds will be tested. Youth must be informed that cough medicine typically contains ephedrine which is a no-no.
Tom Cotner said that PNTF needs a coaching education class. President Hickman said that will be a new business subject for the next meeting in August. He appointed Tom Cotner as head of the committee to research who to get to teach it and when and where. Kwajalein volunteered to assist Tom.
