RACE IN REVIEW: At one kilometer in this 29-strong women's field, were three abreast with Amy Rudolph, Deena Drossin (celebrating her birthday today...) and Elva Dryer leading the way. By 2km, Amy Rudolph (6:08) had a four second lead over Drossin. Dryer was another seven seconds bedhind and then came a threesome of Becky Spies, Molly Watcke and Cathy Vasto. With 500 meters remaining, Rudolph was only four seconds ahead of Drossin, and Dryer was 15 seconds behind. Watcke and Vasto then followed as a twosome with another twosome of Spies and Shayne Culpepper. Rudolph finished strongly, nine seconds ahead of Drossin. NOTES 'N' QUOTES: Amy Rudolph successfully defended her 4 kilometer U.S. cross country title today against a strong field. A resident of Providence, RI, Rudolph placed third at the 1996 U.S. Olympic Trials in the 5000 meters. She went on to place tenth in the Games later that summer in Atlanta. She finished 1996 ranked second in the U.S. in the 5000, and in 1997, after a second place finish in that event at the U.S. Outdoor Championships in Indianapolis, Rudolph ended the campaign ranked third nationally. Rudolph placed third at the U.S. Championships in New Orleans last summer. She finished the season ranked third in the U.S. She placed seventh in the 5000 at the 1998 Goodwill Games in New York. Also a standout on the roads, Rudolph won the 1995 Ro-Jack's 5km, and she is a three-time winner of the Manchester Road Race. Rudolph was the 1995 NCAA 1500 meter champion during her junior year at Providence. Amy Rudolph: "The first mile was really fast, and that got us going right from the gun. I had to keep that pace going because those girls are top athletes and they are going to come back at you. Deena was right there the whole time, so I knew I had to keep going. This is my last race until World's, then I probably won't race again until May or June." About the world championships in Belfast: "My goal is to get a medal but I'd be happy if I could finish in the top five." About the 1999 outdoor season. "I'll just be trying to run fast and make the world championship team. The American record is a goal of mine as well (5000 meters)." DEENA DROSSIN: Yesterday, for the second year in a row, Drossin was victorious in the senior women's 8000 meter national championship. "At world's I'm just going to focus on the 8K because I know that's where my strengths lie. I love cross country and there aren't that many races available to you in the United States, so I wanted to run a quicker race today that I'm not used to and get my legs under me. Amy is an awesome runner, there's no doubt about it. She's a fabulous talent for this country as far as distance running is concerned. I felt good out there today and coming in second to Amy is no slouch. This race was a confidence booster for me going into the world championships"
